Wings Arena, the northeast’s newest premier ice rink, has taken flight. On Saturday the arena marked its completion with a grand opening including ribbon cutting, food, ice cream, and a DJ.
A severe thunderstorm shook the building moments before the event, but rain, hail and even heavy winds did not dampen the enthusiasm.
The crowd counted down backward from 10 as Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons prepared to cut the red ribbon.

Wings CEO Francois Magnant, who is also the general manager of the Greenwich Skating Club welcomed the crowd to the grand opening.
“The mission of Wings Arena is to bring people together that have a passion for skating sports, whether that’s ice hockey, figure skating, or just skating,” Magnant said. “And doing it in an environment that is friendly and welcoming and where we’re hoping that you can connect with friends and maybe make new friends, and hopefully just have a good time.”
Mr. Magnant pointed to a table featuring several hockey trophies including the Conn Smythe Trophy, an annual award given to the NHL’s playoff most valuable player.

Mr. Magnant recognized Kenny Turano, CFO of Matterhorn Fit, which will in a few months have a location within Wings, specializing in gym rehab and performance.
Mayor Caroline Simmons said, “I want to thank Francois and the entire leadership team – the planners, the visionaries, the funders, the builders and everyone who worked together to make this beautiful facility possible. We’re so thrilled you chose to do it in Stamford.”
Earlier in the day – before the storm – guests enjoyed dunking hockey players in a dunk tank!

Wings is located on property in Stamford, just over the Greenwich line, that is zoned for industrial use and was previously home to the original Conair building. The Wings parcel featured a vacant warehouse.
After the ribbon cutting guests hit the ice during an open skate session. Entry and skate rental were free to mark the moment.
Wings Arena is located at 50 Barry Place in Stamford.
