UPDATED: Neither Speed Nor Road Conditions Contributed to Crash at Delavan and Veterans Way

Update, Aug 15, 2025.  Greenwich Police investigation revealed that a vehicle (Vehicle 1) traveling westbound on Delavan Ave crossed over the double yellow center lines and struck the front driver side of another vehicle that was traveling eastbound.

Neither speed nor any parked vehicles or other road conditions were determined to have any contributing factor in this collision.

Police said that Vehicle 1 then turned left, in an uncontrolled manner, and crashed into another vehicle that was also traveling eastbound behind the first struck vehicle.  Vehicle 1 continued turning and ultimately collided with the northwest corner of 302 Delavan Ave.

Police said there were no injuries report as a result of the crash.

Investigation determined that driver of Vehicle 1 was in violation of – C.G.S. 14-230 (a) Failure to Drive Right and was issued a written infraction.

Neither speed nor any parked vehicles or other road conditions were determined to have any contributing factor in this collision.

Original story, August 13, 2025; The intersection in Byram at Delavan Ave / Veterans Way / Chestnut Street by Burgers Shakes Fries was again the scene of a crash.

Greenwich Police PIO Sabrina Diaz confirmed there was a crash Tuesday night at 9:56pm. Police and Fire responded to the scene where at least three cars were involved in the crash. Photos on the BNA Facebook page show two cars with New York plates and one with Connecticut plates – all with significant damage.

One car that came to a rest by the entrance of the restaurant appears to have heavy front end damage and a deployed airbag.

According to a post from BSF owner Kory Wollins, his restaurant is fine and damage was superficial.

BNA chair Liz Eckert said in an email Wednesday, “It is unfortuante that there was yet another accident in Byram last night. I am grateful that no one was seriously injured.”

Eckert added, “The BNA is working closely with the Town of Greenwich to implement pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures. It is clear that we need more police presence and enforcement of existing traffic laws. The Byram Neighborhood Association (BNA) has been proactive, working with the First Selectman’s office and the Greenwich’s Department of Public Works to implement traffic calming measures like new crosswalks and speed signal lights. We have also requested Hawk Lights, Speed bumps, raised crosswalks and ‘No Parking Here to Corner’ signage to improve visibility. However, compliance with existing laws and police enforcement remain major issues in our community.”

With ongoing development of North Main Street in Port Chester, traffic continues to increase on Mill St and Delavan Ave as vehicles move to and from New York to exit 2 of I-95.

Residents have requested traffic calming from DPW and speed enforcement from police. Pedestrians crossing the intersection include children who attend New Lebanon School, Byram Shubert Library patrons, visitors to the Byram Veterans building, and others visiting Byram’s commercial district with its shops and restaurants.

The BNA conducted a survey back in 2021.

One of the comments was, “Crossing Delavan at Chestnut and Veterans Way is to flirt with death.”

The Board of Selectmen, who are the town’s traffic authority, approved bump outs and a flashing beacon as traffic calming measures at the intersection, but the flashing beacon was hit  by vehicles.

Then the  bump outs were removed and replaced with gradually sloping ones.

There were signs on Veterans Way saying, ‘No Through Trucks,’ but 18-wheel trucks were habitually driving through, so the Selectmen approved a 4 ton weight limit on Veterans Way.

This story will be updated when there is more details on the crash from Greenwich Police.
