Driver Charged with Negligent Homicide with a Motor Vehicle for Stamford Motorcycle Death

on Saturday the Stamford Police Dept’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (CARS) concluded its investigation of a fatal May 17, 2024 crash that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old Stamford resident.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2020 Kawasaki motorcycle was being operated northbound on Lockwood Ave at the intersection with William Street at 9:13 pm when a 2011 Toyota Corolla being driven by 58-year-old Stamford resident, Hector Rolando Lemus-Portillo traveling southbound on Lockwood.

At the intersection of Lockwood Ave and William Street the Toyota attempted to make a left turn and entered into the motorcycle’s path of travel. The motorcycle attempted to stop but couldn’t and struck the front end of the Toyota. Mr. Lemus-Portillo remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The motorcycle operator was transported to Stamford Hospital where ED staff attempted life-saving measures, but, the operator succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.

The State of Connecticut, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the motorcycle died from multiple blunt force traumas as a result from the crash.

Due driver of the motorcycle is not being identified due to that person’s age.

The investigation determined that Mr. Lemus-Portillo was found at fault for the collision and an arrest warrant was granted by Stamford Superior Court for the charges of Negligent Homicide with a Motor Vehicle and Failure to Yield While Turning Left.

On Friday, Mr. Lemus-Portillo responded to Stamford Police Headquarters with his attorney and turned himself in on the warrant and was released after posting a $60,000 court set bond.

He has a court date scheduled on November 8, 2024.
