Greenwich Land Trust Program to Feature Sefra Alexandra, The Seed Huntress

An event titled “Ecotypes, Ecoregions + Ecological Restoration: Fortifying the Living Seed” will feature Sefra Alexandra, The Seed Huntress and Dan Brubaker, the Greenwich Land Trust Conservation Outreach Manager on Friday, October 21 at 10:00 am at Greenwich Land Trust, 370 Round Hill Rd, at the Mueller Preserve.

Join the GLT to learn about continuing efforts to restore locally sourced native plants by The Ecotype Project and GLT’s Seed-to-Seed program. Learn about the regional effort to promote ecotypic native seeds, tour GLT’s greenhouse, grounds and newly installed native plant founder plots.

They’ll also collect seeds during a walk through the meadow at GLT, and attendees will have a chance to plant seeds to take home for germination next spring.

Sefra Alexandra, “The Seed Huntress,” is an endurance race ethnobotanist on a hunt to preserve the biodiversity of our wild and cultivated lands through seed conservation. Sefra leads – The Ecotype Project – to amplify the amount of truly local native seed available for ecological restoration, creating the first ecoregional seed supply chain in the Northeast, USA. The Ecotype Project has created a model for native plants material development utilizing the ecoregional framework to ensure we are planting the right plants in the right place.

GLT’s Seed-to Seed program is dedicated to restoring native plants to the local landscape through plant propagation, education, and habitat restoration.

Each year, GLT collects seeds from over 50 species of native plants and propagates them at their Mueller Preserve.

The plants are used for GLT and community restoration projects and sold at GLT’s annual spring plant sale.

Registration is required via the Greenwich Land Trust website.
