Youth Commission Partners with the Alliance to Increase Scholarship Program

The First Selectman’s Youth Commission has partnered with Greenwich Alliance for Education to support engagement, fundraising, and marketing efforts for the Alliance’s 12th Annual Turkey Trot, a 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk to be held on Saturday, November 26. In addition to supporting education and enrichment programs the Alliance offers to students in Greenwich public schools, funds raised will allow the First Selectman’s Youth Commission to grow their scholarship program.

While the First Selectman’s Youth Commission has offered a scholarship to a graduate of a Greenwich High School for the past three years, they are committed to increasing their support in response to the financial strain caused by rising college costs. The First Selectman’s Youth Commission is working to grow their scholarship program. They will increase the number of scholarships offered to peers in the community as well as the amount of each award provided to recipients. The First Selectman’s Youth Commission’s scholarship program is facilitated by the Greenwich Scholarship Association.

The Youth Commission works to create impact through youth-focused and youth-led projects. Such programs include several mental health-focused initiatives, the annual Middle School STEM Fair, and annual Greenwich Student Diversity Leadership Conference. The First Selectman’s Youth Commission also sponsors a writing and film competition, and projects offered in collaboration with other community organizations including the Greenwich Police Department, Greenwich Together, YWCA Greenwich, the Dept of Human Services, and Arch Street Teen Center.

“Our partnership with the Alliance grew from a mutual goal to create opportunities for young people,” said Tomas Jasson, Chair of the First Selectman’s Youth Commission. “The First Selectman’s Youth Commission is committed to empowering our peers and enhancing their experience. Reducing barriers to education supports our mission.” The Youth Commission will encourage the engagement of high school clubs and teams as well as middle and elementary school teams. They will also seek the support of event sponsors.
