Peter Georgiou Appointed GHS Athletic Director

Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones on Tuesday announced the appointment of Peter Georgiou as director of athletics for Greenwich High School, effective immediately.

Mr. Georgiou has served as interim director of athletics since January 2022 following the retirement announcement of long-time Director of Athletics Gus Lindine.

“Peter Georgiou has proven to the entire Greenwich High School athletic community that he is a committed and dedicated school administrator deserving of a more permanent role,” Dr. Jones said in a release on Tuesday. “The Cardinals athletic program has a proud and storied tradition of success on and off the playing fields and courts that continued this past school year with a state-best seven CIAC state championships and many more incredible successes. Mr. Georgiou is the person to lead our coaches and student-athletes today and into the future.”

As director of athletics, Georgiou responsibilities include: managing day-to-day operations of GHS’ athletics department, including the supervision of staff and coaches; planning and scheduling all GHS athletic events, officials, facilities, and transportation; and working closely with GHS administrative team and staff to develop and implement an athletic/academic code of conduct consistent with the goals of the District.

“Peter Georgiou has done exemplary work since being appointed interim athletic director, especially in the area of communication,” GHS Principal Ralph Mayo said. “He collaborates with all of our constituents and is a valued member of the leadership team. A few weeks ago, GHS was named the number one overall program in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference. Mr. Georgiou deserves a great deal of the credit for this honor. I look forward to Mr. Georgiou’s continued work in enhancing the culture and climate of one of the largest athletic programs in New England.”

“I am excited about this tremendous opportunity to work with the amazing staff, student-athletes, and families in this district as a part of a dedicated leadership team,” Mr. Georgiou said. “Greenwich has such a rich history of athletics and I am looking forward to our future success. The best part of my day has been working with our students and coaches, seeing them perform at high levels. I consider myself lucky to be a part of this great community.”

Mr. Georgiou holds a bachelor’s in Exercise Science/Teacher Prep from the Southern Connecticut State University, a master’s in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Emporia State University, and Educational Leadership: Intermediate Administrator Certification from Sacred Heart University.
