Jen Bencivengo Named Interim Principal at Old Greenwich School

Greenwich Schools Superintendent Bill McKersie has appointed Jennifer Bencivengo as the Interim Principal at Old Greenwich School, effective July 1, 2016.

“I am humbled and honored to return to Old Greenwich School as Interim Principal,” Bencivengo said. “Old Greenwich School has an impressive reputation as a School of Distinction with a wonderfully international community. I am looking forward to contributing to the long history of success for the 2016-2017 school year.”

Ms. Bencivengo is currently the Assistant Principal at North Mianus School, a position she has held for nine years.

In addition, she has successfully run the Greenwich Public Schools Summer School program since 2011, closing gaps in achievement and increasing enrollment by 43% over the last six years.

Ms. Bencivengo will continue in this role for the 2016 Summer School program. In addition to her extensive leadership experience and understanding of the role of an interim principal, Ms. Bencivengo impressed the interview committee, including OGS teacher and parent representatives among others, with her strong knowledge of curriculum and assessments and her enthusiasm and passion for elementary education.

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ellen Flanagan said, “During her eighteen year tenure with the District, Ms. Bencivengo has proven herself to be a talented educator with a deep understanding of pedagogy. She recognizes the power of data to positively impact teaching and learning and has considerable leadership experience as an assistant principal and as the program coordinator for the GPS Summer School program. Most importantly, Ms. Bencivengo values and nurtures the partnership between parents and teachers in support of student academic and social-emotional growth. I am confident she will provide strong leadership for the Old Greenwich School community during this transition.”

The opening for an interim assistant principal for North Mianus School will be posted immediately, with the appointment anticipated by the end of July 2016. The search for Principal of Old Greenwich School will be conducted at the start of the hiring season in January 2017.

An educator for nineteen years, Ms. Bencivengo began her career as the Director of the Sylvan Learning Center in Wallingford, Connecticut in 1997. Ms. Bencivengo began teaching with the Greenwich Public Schools in 1998 at Central Middle School as a language arts and special education teacher. In March 2007, she was appointed interim assistant principal for Old Greenwich School through June 2007, at which time she assumed her current position as assistant principal for North Mianus School.

Ms. Bencivengo received a bachelor of arts degree with a triple major in elementary education, secondary education and English from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA in 1997; a master of arts degree with a major in humanities from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT in 2000; and a sixth year certificate in administration from the University of Connecticut, Stamford, CT in 2003.
