In response to the pressing demand for accessible and affordable childcare, the YMCA of Greenwich launched its After School Enrichment Program at the beginning of 2024.
The expanding waitlist for the program underscores the critical need for high-quality childcare within the community.
To meet the demand head-on, the YMCA has partnered with key community stakeholders to create a transformative and accessible program. Toward that end, Star Mountain Capital’s Charitable Foundation has generously funded essential equipment for an engaging and educational environment.
Brett Hickey, CEO of Star Mountain Capital and Founder of Star Mountain Charitable Foundation, said the YMCA was a vital resource to many children, families and communities.

Having lost his mother to cancer at the age of 6 and growing up with a single father who was a high school teacher, Brett understands the importance of community support. Mr. Hickey also volunteers his time as a board member for the Greenwich YMCA of Greenwich and his wife Allison Hickey, is an active volunteer supporting many initiatives for the YMCA, the local community and children.
In collaboration with the Greenwich United Way’s Reading Champions program, the YMCA has elevated educational opportunities for program participants. Dedicated volunteers from Reading Champions now provide personalized reading support three times a week, empowering students to develop essential literacy skills and a love for learning.
The seamless integration of the program into daily family life is ensured through a
partnership with Greenwich Public Schools. Bus services from Julian Curtiss, Hamilton Avenue, North Street, Cos Cob, and New Lebanon schools exemplify the YMCA’s commitment to removing logistical barriers, facilitating access to quality after-school care for families.
“Our after-school program focuses on more than just providing a safe space for
children. It’s about nurturing their holistic development,” said Matthew Skaarup, CEO of the YMCA of Greenwich. “With the support of our partners, we are proud to offer an after-school experience that empowers children to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, while providing affordable and safe childcare for their families.”
True to the YMCA’s commitment to inclusion, the After School Enrichment Program ensures access for all. Over 60% of students attend Title 1 schools, with more than half being bilingual, and a significant percentage from single-parent or government-assisted households. Community backing of the YMCA’s annual campaign ensures financial aid availability, with over 68% of students currently benefiting from this support.
