Shoplifting Charge Leads to Marijuana Arrest at Stop & Shop

On Tuesday, Greenwich Police Department responded to Stop & Shop, 161 West Putnam Ave, on the report that managers were detaining a subject for shoplifting.

Upon arrival, the investigation determined that the accused subject, Waiten Meli, 63, of 15 Lafayette Ct., Apt. 50, had placed grocery items in a backpack as well as items in a shopping cart. According to the port, Meli paid for the items in the shopping cart, but not the backpack. The accused was stopped by store management as he was leaving the store when they found the unpaid items.

An search of the accused’s backpack, subsequent to his arrest, found a small baggie with suspected marijuana. Meli was charged with Illegal Possession of Marijuana and Larceny 6th degree.

The accused subject was issued a Misdemeanor Summons and released at the scene on a Promise to Appear in Stamford Superior Court on Aug. 5, 2015.
