Attempting to Cash Fraudulent Checks in Cos Cob Was Wanted in New York

Around 1:30pm on Monday March 26, Greenwich Police responded to People’s United Bank in Cos Cob on a report of a man attempting to cash fraudulent checks.

Investigation revealed that the suspect, Giovanni Ortiz, 26, of 123 Hoyt St in Stamford, had cashed a fraudulent check and was attempting to cash another.

Mr. Ortiz was charged with Larceny 3, Criminal Attempt at Larceny 3, Identity Theft 3, Criminal Impersonation, Forgery 1, Forgery 2, Forgery 3. He was also charged with Interfering with an Officer/Resisting for giving officers a false name when he was arrested.

Ortiz was also charged with Extradition Arrest No Warrant when a NCIC query returned an active warrant held by New York Dept of Corrections for Violation of Strict and Intensive Supervision and Treatment and Violation of Parole Conditional Release of Post-Release Supervision.

His bond was set at a total of $105,000 which he was unable to post at the time of his arrest.

Ortiz was placed in a Greenwich Police Dept cell block and has a date in Stamford Superior Court on April 9, 2018.
