GEMS Earns Accreditation from Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services

Greenwich EMS (GEMS) has received reaccreditation for the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) for its compliance with the national standards of excellence.

GEMS is one of 186 ambulance services across the county to successfully complete the voluntary review process which included completion of a comprehensive application and on-site review by national experts in emergency medical services (EMS).

With this achievement, GEMS remains one of two of more than 150 ambulance services in Connecticut.

CAAS, an independent accrediting agency, promotes and encourages the highest standards in the ambulance service industry. Achieving accreditation requires meeting or exceeding a set of over 100 stringent standards, many of which surpass state requirements, designed to enhance clinical and operational proficiency and reduce organizational risk and liability.

Since receiving accreditation in 2021, GEMS has strived to continue to meet or exceed over 100 standards set by CAAS.

Many of the standards exceed those established by the state and are designed to help increase operational efficiency and decrease risk and liability across the entire organization. The CAAS evaluators conducted a detailed two-day inspection, checking facilities, reviewing procedures and protocols, and interviewing personnel within GEMS and our community partners. ” All staff members played a valuable role in our ability to meet the Commission’s high standards and we are extremely proud of this accomplishment,” said Tracy Schietinger, Executive Director.

“GEMS has always been driven to provide the highest quality patient care along with being a trusted community partner and CAAS accreditation validates our mission, values, and commitment to the Greenwich community,” Schietinger said.

“The process to achieve CAAS accreditation — considered the gold standard in our industry—was made possible by the dedication of our staff and our unwavering focus on delivering top-tier care to the citizens of Greenwich,” Schietinger added.
