Flaming Mailboxes, Unfortunate Hallmark of Memorial Day Weekend

Mailbox vandals have upped their ante. We last reported sprees of bashed in mailboxes in November and December 2015 in the Riversville Rd and North Mianus areas of Greenwich.

According to Lt. Kraig Gray, over this Memorial Day weekend, mailbox vandalism escalated to include fire. On May 29, mailboxes on both Valleywood Rd and Field Road were targeted.

“Someone lit a citronella candle inside the mailbox on Valleywood Rd,” Lt Gray said, adding that the mail caught fire.

A Greenwich Police officer on patrol around 2:30am spotted the mailbox on fire. Lt. Gray said Greenwich Fire Dept came out and extinguished the fire, and damage was limited to the mailbox.

Later on May 29, officers were detailed to a private residence on Field Road on a report of more vandalism. “When the homeowner went to retrieve his mail, he found the mail was burned.”
