Crash into Store in Riverside Results in Fatality; Putnam Ave Shut to Traffic from Sound Beach to Sheephill

On Thursday afternoon around 4:00pm an incident in the area of the Verizon store in Riverside near Riverside Commons shut down East Putnam Ave from Sound Beach Ave to Sheephill Rd.

Traffic backed up into the Walgreens parking lot and onto Sheephill Rd. Plumes of black smoke were visible from Valbella restaurant.

Greenwich Police Captain Mark Zuccerella released a statement to media saying, “At approximately 3:50pm, Greenwich Police Dept, Greenwich Fire Dept, and Greenwich Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the Thruway Shopping Center located at 1233 East Putnam Ave on the report of a motor vehicle that crashed into a store within the shopping center.  A fire resulted from the collision.”

Zuccerella said preliminary investigation has revealed that the vehicle operator is deceased.  There are no reports of other injured parties.

Greenwich Fire Dept has contained the fire and will be turning the scene over to the Greenwich Police Department.  The Thruway Shopping Center at this time is closed.

No further information is available at this time. 

When more information is able to be released, police will publish a release.
