Greenwich’s Emergency Management Dept is closely monitoring a strong nor’easter that is forecast to impact Greenwich and the surrounding region starting Sunday afternoon and lasting through Monday.
The forecast is for heavy rain and strong winds with gusts over 50 miles per hour.
As of Friday afternoon the NWS is forecasting Saturday will partly sunny with 30 percent chance of rain mainly between 2pm and 5pm and cloudy skies, with a high near 66.
The NWS also issued a Coastal Flood Watch in effect from Sunday, October 12, at 12:00pm until Monday, October 13 (Columbus Day), ending at 8:00pm.
Greenwich residents should also be careful of potentially hazardous travel conditions during periods of heavy rain and strong wind. Residents should monitor the weather throughout the weekend to make sure they have the most up to date forecasts and should prepare by securing outdoor items like patio furniture, decorations and trash bins.
Residents should make sure their cell phones and personal electronics are charged in case of outages. The Margenot Atrium of the Greenwich Public Safety Complex will be open 24 hours for people to come in and charge small electronic devices if they need to.
During times of heavy rain, residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways. If you see a flooded roadway, remember the simple tip of “turn around, don’t drown.” If you see downed trees or wires, please call local authorities and do not approach them.
