He was born on August 16, 1931 to Rocco and Santa (Morabito) Lagano in Port Chester, NY, and graduated from Port Chester High School in 1949.
John proudly served his country in the U.S Coast Guard from 1951–1954 as an engine mechanic in New York Harbor and Groton, CT. He was honorably discharged on October 29, 1954. He then went on to work for NY Telephone/AT&T as a telephone repairman for over 35 years, retiring in 1990.
John is the beloved husband of Mary Jane (LaBella) Lagano, having been married for 65 years, loving father of Lori White (Ken), John Lagano, Jr., Robert “Bob” Lagano and Chris Lagano (Judith), cherished grandfather of Ryan, Erin, Jessica, Max and Kyle, and great-grandfather of John Anthony.
He was predeceased by his dear siblings, Minnie, Sam, Mary, and Tony. John’s greatest joy in life (besides spending time with his family) was his passion for boating. He owned many boats of different sizes, but he cherished his 35’ Bertram, Aloha, purchased in Florida and brought up to Greenwich on a trip filled with many adventures. Many summer vacations were spent on the boat traveling to Fire Island, Block Island, Mystic, Port Jefferson, and various other ports of call.
John was also proud of the home he and Mary Jane built in Edgewater, FL. After retiring, he and Mary Jane enjoyed their lives as “snowbirds”, especially when family came to visit.
John not only was a master mechanic known for his ability to fix just about
anything with an engine, he was also always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
To honor his life, family and friends will gather on Sunday, July 28 from 2:00-6:00pm at Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave. Greenwich, CT.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, July 29 at Sacred Heart Church in Greenwich, followed by entombment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greenwich.
