The last time Heather Smeriglio ran for reelection as Greenwich’s Tax Collector, the day was filled with clouds and rain. This time, as she announced her fourth reelection campaign outside Cos Cob Library, the approximately 50 attendees stood in the blazing sun to support her.
Former Tax Collector Tod Laudonia began the event by commending Smeriglio on her dedication.

“COVID seems like it was a century ago,” he said. “But during the whole debacle Heather was there everyday, answering phones and doing whatever needed to be done. I can’t say that about a lot of other people.”
Laudonia then went on to introduce First Selectman Fred Camillo, who said that it meant a lot to the public that Smeriglio can provide answers that give them hope.
“Your collection rate is second to none,” Camillo said. “So we’re blessed to have you and make sure you all get out there and tell everybody to give her not only a victory, but an overwhelming victory. She deserves it.”

Smeriglio then spoke about her campaign and her intentions if elected once again. This past year, under her guidance, the town had a collection rate of 99.8 percent. Smeriglio said that she will again offer extended hours during the last week of collection, and residents should look out for their bills next week in the mail.
“I’m so blessed that I’m able to serve my hometown, and I truly do love what I do,” she said. “I thank God that He has given me the ability to do my best job and to be able to run for office again.”
Laudonia asked attendees to donate what they can to Smeriglio’s campaign. He said that over the years, it has become more and more expensive, so every donation or effort is greatly appreciated.
