A gathering on Saturday at Armstrong Court honored the life, service, and enduring contributions of Sam Romeo, and unveiled a new street name, “Honorary Sam Romeo Way” to celebrate Romeo’s decades of advocacy for affordable housing and his commitment to public service. Romeo is the chair of the board of Greenwich Communities, formerly known as the Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich.
According to a release, there were than 50 attendees at the event, which opened with remarks from Anthony Johnson, CEO and Executive Director of Greenwich Communities, and James Boutelle, Vice-Chairman of Greenwich Communities.
“Without Sam—his direction and his commitment, not just for Greenwich Communities but for the Town of Greenwich—this would not have been possible,” Mr. Johnson said.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow commissioners, Jim Boutelle lauded Mr. Romeo’s collaborative leadership. Additional remarks followed from First Selectman Fred Camillo, State Senator Ryan Fazio, and Former First Selectman Peter Tesei.
First Selectman Fred Camillo praised Mr. Romeo’s long tenure as “the go-to guy in the RTM and for the community,” adding that under his leadership at Greenwich Communities, “the Town of Greenwich is leading the effort of supporting and promoting affordable housing in the state. Sam is a treasure.”
State Senator Ryan Fazio (R-36) said, “Greenwich Communities is an unusual name for a housing authority, but if you get to know this town, it’s actually quite appropriate. It’s not just housing—it’s about community.”
Senator Fazio presented an official state citation recognizing Mr. Romeo’s efforts to expand and improve public housing in Greenwich.
“Sam has spent decades working to make Greenwich a better place,” Fazio said.
Former First Selectman Peter Tesei reflected on knowing Sam and his wife Mary for 35 years, recalling the 2011 recommendation to appoint Mr. Romeo to the Housing Authority.
“Since then, Sam has lifted people who often do not have a voice in our community. He has given them the dignity and recognition they truly deserve,” Tesei said.
Mr. Romeo said the dedication was humbling. He thanked his family—acknowledging the recent loss of his older sister—and recognizing his wife, Mary, with whom he served on both the RTM and RTC.
Following the ceremony, attendees connected with family, friends, and colleagues to reflect on Mr. Romeo’s legacy. The event underscored the strong partnership among the Town of Greenwich, Greenwich Communities, and residents in advancing quality housing and services for the community.
