The Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works announced this week that it had received a third award for the Davis Avenue Bridge Replacement Project.
Accolades include the 2023 Achievement in Civil Engineering (ACE) Award from the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE), 2023 Project Team Awards from the Connecticut Building Congress (CBC), and most recently the 2024 Engineering Excellence Merit Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut (ACEC/CT).

These awards are given to projects that are deemed as an innovative and outstanding achievement in engineering.
Located in the Town of Greenwich’s Bruce Park and situated over Indian Harbor, the Davis Avenue bridge was originally constructed in 1934 and is utilized by 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles daily.
The project upgraded infrastructure and improved pedestrian access to Bruce Park while maintaining the area’s aesthetics. Completed in the spring of 2022, the project minimized construction impacts and reduced road closure time by employing Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques.

Project Improvement Features:
• Corrected existing structural and functional deficiencies of the bridge.
• Improved multimodal traffic flow and safety at bridge crossing.
• Widened driving lanes and shoulders.
• Installed five-foot-long road shoulders to make the bridge easier for bicyclists to use.

• Installed a brand-new pedestrian bridge.
• Installed new curbing and sidewalk near the bridge.
• Installed additional drainage to improve run-off.
• Eliminated the bridge’s middle pier to reduce the likelihood of clogged debris and flooding.
• Constructed a fish ladder that provides migrating fish a detour route to swim upstream.
• Installed new pavement and repaved markings on portions of Davis Avenue near the bridge.
• Moved utilities from public view.
The project cost was $4.1 million. 100 percent of the construction and inspection of this project was funded through the State of Connecticut Local Bridge Program grant. Construction plans were prepared by Alfred Benesch & Company, of Glastonbury, CT and the contractor for this project was A. Vitti Excavators, LLC of Stamford, CT.
