CT Officials React to News of CT Senator Chris Murphy’s Hospitalization

Chris Murphy, a Democratic US Senator from Connecticut, was hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Saturday afternoon.

According to the New York Times, Murphy, 53, was attending his son’s hockey game on when he “started experiencing numbness in his arm.” The Senator was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors diagnosed a stroke and later transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for monitoring and treatment. The article quoted Murphy’s chief of staff Allison Herwitt saying, “The doctors are encouraged by his progress; he is awake and alert; and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”

Murphy was elected to the House in 2006 and to the Senate in 2012 when he won the open Senate seat in Connecticut vacated by retiring Senator Joe Lieberman, defeating Republican nominee Linda McMahon.

He was reelected to his second term in 2018 and won his third term in the November 2024 election.

Murphy is not on the ballot Tuesday.

The senior US senator from Connecticut, Richard Blumenthal, released the following statement on the hospitalization of Senator Murphy.

“Thinking of my great friend and colleague, Chris Murphy. I know how fiercely he fights and I’m certain I’ll be welcoming him back to the Senate soon,” Blumenthal said.

Governor Ned Lamont and Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz released the following statements.

“Just two days ago, I was with Senator Chris Murphy doing what he loves most: encouraging Connecticut residents to make their voices heard and vote on Tuesday,” Governor Lamont said. “There is no stronger advocate for our democracy, and no one who fights harder for the people of this state. Chris is a great friend to Connecticut and to me personally, and Annie and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers. I am sure that he will be walking across the state again very soon, and we will all be cheering him on.”

Lt. Governor Bysiewicz said, “I was with Senator Murphy on Friday evening, where he was energetically encouraging voters to participate in the upcoming election. I am glad to hear that he is doing well, and I look forward to continuing our joint efforts to support the people of Connecticut. We are all wishing Chris a speedy recovery and keeping him in our thoughts and prayers.”

Attorney General William Tong released a statement saying, “My thoughts are with Senator Murphy and his family today. He is the toughest fighter I know – for Connecticut and for our country – and I have no doubt he’s going to fight through this challenge now. We need him back on the front lines for all of us.”
