LETTER: Lots of rain, no drought, so why continue watering restrictions?

Submitted by Mark D. Fichtel, Greenwich

Fred Camillo, Greenwich’s First Selectman, included the following comment in his weekly email on Friday: “We got some very good news from Aquarion Water Company this week.  All of the rain we have received lately has had a positive impact on Bargh Reservoir.  Aquarion let us know on Thursday morning that the rain has allowed the reservoir levels to increase to the 20-year average.  That means Aquarion’s forecasts indicate we are not going to hit any additional drought curves for the rest of the year.”

My question is — that being the case, why are Aquarion and the Town of Greenwich continuing with watering restrictions?

Did Aquarion and Greenwich never consider that having water restrictions when none are needed will make it less likely that people will heed efforts to restrict watering when that is really needed?

Has no one at either the company or the town ever heard of the story of “The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf?”

That’s exactly what both are doing by continuing water restrictions at this point.  Neither is showing intelligent leadership, and that may come back to haunt us at some point in the future.
