Indivisible Greenwich: act now to protect the Special Counsel’s investigation

Statement released on Nov 7 by Indivisible Greenwich on Trump’s forced resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions:

Today President Trump forced Jeff Sessions to resign and then replaced him with a man who has evidenced contempt for the Mueller investigation. Trump’s actions are a direct threat to the rule of law, a fundamental principle on which our democracy is based.

Congress must thus act to continue the independent investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and demonstrate that no one, not even the president of the United State, is above the law. Failure to do so is antithetical to our Constitution and our system of government.

Our country was founded on the Rule of Law — the principle that all people and institutions are subject to laws that are fairly and evenly applied and enforced. The Rule of Law acts to restrict the arbitrary exercise of power. When our laws are arbitrarily enforced or flouted, democracy is threatened. Today, a man who is a subject of a lawfully initiated independent investigation, the President of the United States, has thwarted and appears to be in the process of ending an investigation into his actions and the actions of his family. He is acting “above” the law. In the history of our country, no one has been above the law.

We stand against this attack on the Rule of Law. We stand with our brothers and sisters across the country who are fighting to protect our democracy from sliding toward authoritarianism.

What we do in the next hours and days may make the difference in the form of our government going forward. Our focus? Congress — the only body with the constitutional power and obligation to rein in the Executive Branch.

Across the country, we must send the message to our elected representatives that they must act now to protect the Special Counsel’s investigation. Please contact Senators Blumenthal, Murphy and Representative Himes.

Contact your friends and family in other states and ask them to contact their elected officials. Demand that they ensure that documents and work product from the Mueller investigation are
preserved. Demand that they ensure that an independent investigation continues. This is not a Democrat issue or a Republican issue. This is an American issue.

This is about our rule of law, our Constitution and our democracy. We cannot allow this President, or any President, to be above the law. The time to act is now. This matters.

Please join us in front of Greenwich Town Hall  on Thursday, Nov 8 afternoon at 5:00pm to stand with people across the country against this assault on the Rule of Law.
