Here’s to Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Speech for All LTE Writers

“I’m mad as Hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!” was shouted across TV screens by the character news anchor Howard Beale in the 1976 film “Network.”

I am not mad enough to shout out my window (well, sometimes), but I do take issue with the misrepresentation of one our greatest leaders and 16th President –  Abraham Lincoln in a recent LTE.

The Republican party at the time Lincoln served was more akin in principle and spirit to today’s Democratic party.  Current Maga-swayed Republicans, yes locals too, either don’t know their history or just conveniently claim President Lincoln as one of their own in ideals.  Let’s call a spade a spade.

If Lincoln was indeed today’s MAGA inclined Republican, would he have mounted a Civil War on the principles stated in our 1776 Declaration of Independence upholding that all men have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?  Even those of color who are mainly being targeted and deported, and throw in the questioning of  Birthright Citizenship. How can any person even attempt to live these rights and those written in the Supreme Law of the United States of America:  the US Constitution and  later amendments to expand on those freedoms without any proper shelter, food and healthcare?

Label me what you will – independent, democrat, progressive republican or whatever – in the name-calling/fist raised chosen communication of President Trump who is a so-called Republican.

Please do not pretend to be a mindreader of Greenwich Representatives Meskers and Arzeno who voted no on House Bill 5002 in deference to local zoning.

As for political strategy, I know of none better organized than local Republicans appearing at local national celebrations with their stands and pamphlets encouraging citizens to come aboard the good ship lollipop and register.  The blueprint is from Project 2025.  Read it and you’ll see it playing out today in every locality across this still great nation.

And a shout out to our local RTC!  “Fooling the people!” ? (Lancaster: Fooling the People) July 2, 2025)

I understand our local media are in the company of nationwide media in that they are excluded (i.e. national Associated Press), harassed, threatened and bullied throughout the USA – as is anyone, in public office or a regular Joe Schmoe – if MAGA doesn’t approve.

So much for the Rule of Law, Freedom of the Press, Free Speech and Assembly.

Happy Independence Day – and be grateful for the freedoms some of us enjoy including the more than decent, even luxurious homes and expensive fine food choices we are blessed to afford and have in Greenwich.
