Enough with the Games — We’re Ready to Support the Buses

Letter to the editor signed by David Alfano, Republican BET Member; Nisha Arora, Republican BET Member; Lucia Jansen, Republican BET Member; Paul Cappiali, Republican BOE Member; Wendy Walsh, Republican BOE Member

The undersigned Republican BET and BOE members have publicly stated our support for restoring the transportation funds needed to preserve current high school start times. That commitment stands.

What we’re seeing now — from Democratic BOE and BET leadership — isn’t problem-solving.

It’s political spin. The BET cannot vote on an interim appropriation unless the BOE formally requests it. That’s the process. To date, no such request has been made.

Some have speculated that we’re backing away from our public commitment to support an interim funding solution. That is simply not true. Our position has not changed.

This issue was not raised at Monday’s BET meeting because interim appropriations must be formally requested by the department. We are still waiting on the BOE to take that step.

It’s time to stop the posturing — and get this done.
