Crow: Collective Action Needed to End Gun Violence

Statement from Trevor Crow, Democratic Candidate for State Senate in the 36th district

Another 21 families have had their lives shattered, adding them to the countless others in our country—in places like Santa Fe, El Paso, Buffalo, and right here in Sandy Hook—who have been irrevocably touched by gun violence.

After each one of the horrific murders, we ask ourselves, will this finally be the moment we can change? The answer, sadly, has all too often been “no.” I am a mother, and I still can’t fully imagine what these families must be experiencing. But I know what I’m feeling. Amidst the striking grief and worry, I’m angry. Angry that, so far, one of our two major parties has refused to act, and has prevented action altogether.

What sets the United States apart, what allows the violence to continue, is the ready availability of firearms in our country. We’re not alone in dealing with mental illness, bullying, or alienation. I’m still hopeful that one day Republicans will finally join us in acting to address easy access to guns—or at the very least stand aside and let us act.

Collective action is the only thing that can end this violence. It’s time that enough is finally enough. We must act.

Thoughts and prayers will not prevent these tragedies. Calling on Republicans to finally join us in meaningful change is our only path forward as a nation.
