Greenwich Tree Conservancy Mourns the Loss of Board President John R. Conte, Welcomes Leslie Lee as Interim President

The Greenwich Tree Conservancy is deeply saddened by the passing of its Board President, John R. Conte, a devoted leader whose commitment to the organization and the broader community spanned decades.

Although he assumed the role of President in January, Conte’s involvement with the Conservancy dates back to its founding. He was one of the founding members of the Board of Directors in 2007, and in those early years he played a vital role in shaping the mission, growth, and success of the Greenwich Tree Conservancy.

A pillar of the Greenwich community, Conte was actively engaged with numerous nonprofits and civic organizations. His thoughtful presence, generous spirit, and tireless dedication will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

In the wake of this loss, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy is grateful to announce that Leslie Lee will step in as Interim President of the Board.

Lee’s commitment to the GTC also began in 2007, when she joined the newly formed Advisory Board. She was the chair of the very first Tree Party in 2011, and helped create the beloved event which carries on to this day. In 2018 she was elected the Vice President of the Board of Directors, a role that she has held ever since.

Lee brings to this role a vast range of leadership experience and a lifelong passion for environmental stewardship. Nationally, she has held key positions with the Garden Club of America, including Vice Chair of Conservation and Vice Chair of National Affairs & Legislation. Locally, she has served as Board Chair of Save the Sound and continues to contribute as a board member. She has also served in leadership positions in the Greenwich Land Trust, Round Hill Community Church, Round Hill Association, and United Way of Greenwich.

As the Greenwich Tree Conservancy mourns the loss of a treasured leader, we are heartened by the steady leadership of Leslie Lee. Her vision, experience, and dedication will help guide the organization through this transition and into a strong future.
