“Rediscover Greenwich Avenue” Exhibition to Transform Historic Buildings into Open-Air Galleries

Greenwich Historical Society is partnering with Untapped New York for an interactive exhibition on Greenwich Avenue.

Step into the past and contrast it to the present by experiencing the evolving story of Greenwich Avenue through “Rediscover Greenwich Avenue,” an interactive exhibition and historic tour program.

The exhibition and tours launch Thursday, May 1, in conjunction with the Greenwich Arts Council’s Art to the Avenue, and runs to July 31.

The murals on the buildings also provide the opportunity for self-guided tours with interactive QR codes that tell the stories of Greenwich Avenue.

“Rediscover Greenwich Avenue transforms historic buildings into open-air galleries,” said Aaron Asis, artist-in-residence with Untapped New York and creator of the exhibition in a release. “With the installation of the large-scale murals, which we’ve incorporated archival images and quotes drawn from the Historical Society collections, Rediscover Greenwich Avenue explores the Avenue’s architectural, social, business and even personal history throughout the years.”

The exhibition features four murals on buildings at 69, 116, 301 and 362 Greenwich Avenue. Through the use of archival photographs and stories, the murals show a view into the past that provides visitors time to pause and reflect on the history of the area. Each mural features an interactive QR code that when scanned, offers expanded insights through compelling visual and narrative digital content, enabling visitors to explore deeper stories about the Avenue’s cultural and commercial history.

Two Way Street

During the month of May, the Rediscover Greenwich Avenue walking tours will conclude  at the Greenwich Arts Council to see “Two Way Street,” a provocative art installation and exhibit, also created by Aaron Asis, on view through May 31, featuring the mural  imagery in a compelling format that evokes the dynamic energy of the Avenue. The public is invited to attend an opening reception of Two Way Street on Sunday, May 4, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at  the Greenwich Arts Council galleries at 299 Greenwich Avenue.

“Rediscover Greenwich Avenue and its companion exhibition Two Way Street, allow visitors to see Greenwich Avenue in an entirely new way,” said Debra Mecky, executive director and CEO of the Greenwich Historical Society.

“Greenwich has almost 400 years of rich history with parts of town established as early as the 1640’s. Today,  Greenwich Avenue is a mecca that attracts visitors from New York City and throughout the world to its shops, restaurants and cafes. By juxtaposing Greenwich’s vibrant scene today with its robust history through these immersive public installations and walking tours, we are connecting our community through generations of change to create a deeper sense of place.”

The Historical Society’s yearlong Rediscover Greenwich initiative invites the public to engage with Greenwich’s history through dynamic tours, exhibitions and community partnerships. Re-Framing 95, the first phase of the program, launched in April  at  Greenwich Historical Society’s Cos Cob  campus,  is ongoing through June. https://greenwichhistory.org/re-framing-95/.

A new guided walking tour of Re-Framing 95 has been added to Saturday, June 28, with tours at 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm and 3:00pm. Free to Historical Society members and $5 for non-members. Space is limited and advance registration is recommended at greenwichhistory.org.
