Sunday’s Pinewood Derby, hosted by Stephen Daley at Miller Motorcars, offered an inspired backdrop of Ferraris and Maseratis, and both the boys and their parents enjoyed a vigorous competition.
Longtime Boy Scout Joseph Schiro, a senior Greenwich High School, emceed the competition, and Marc Ducret served as event chair.
Back in January, at a series of workshops at Camp Seton, the boys selected a template and got busy cutting and sanding their cars from a block of wood. The boys then took the cars home to assemble and paint. Each car had to be 5 oz and a certain length.
Cub Scouts with the fastest cars from their Pack made it to the competition. The top 3 Pinewood Derby car racers from each Greenwich Pack competed to determine the fastest car of 2016.
At the end of the day there were winners, but the Pinewood Derby was equally about creating something with your hands and camaraderie as it was about winning.
Pinewood Derby races are a highlight of the year for Cub Scouts. Adventure, leadership and learning while in the outdoors have remained essential to the Greenwich Scoutin experience since 1912.
