Order Your Greenwich Botanical Center 2021 Plants of the Year

The Greenwich Botanical Center will hold its long awaited annual Plants of the Year Sale this month.

This sale raises funds for horticultural outreach programs, such as internships, eagle scout projects, senior outreach, field trips, pollinator habitat education, as well as out teaching vegetable garden donations to our local food bank.

As Greenwich eagerly anticipates spring, consider supporting the GBC and upgrade your garden by purchasing shrubs and perennials selected both for their beauty and suitability for our local growing conditions.

These plants will attract pollinators to your garden and complement each other for spring and early summer bloom.

Did we mention that they are deer resistant?

This years’ shrub selections are the stunning Weigelia ‘Tuxedo,’ a tidy, compact shrub that wears its fine dark foliage with pure white flowers from late spring to early fall.

Fothergilla gardenia ‘Suzanne’, a Michael Dirr selection, that dazzles from early spring through the fall with fragrant white flowers followed by warm and spicy autumn hues.

Three cheery pink azalea varieties will join the sale as well.  “Marie Hoffman,” “Parade” and “Pink and Sweet,”  are deciduous varieties with bright trumpet shaped fragrant flowers and showy autumn foliage color.

The perennial Plants of the Year form a rainbow of colors, attracting butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects.

From the fiery orange of Asclepias tuberosa or the golden hue of cultivar “Hello Yellow,” to the magenta spires of Agastache “Rosie Posie,” icy blue sparkles of Amsonia ‘Starstruck,’ and the blue indigo of Aquilegia caerulea “Kirigami,” these plants create a spectrum of easy-growing varieties that will delight year after year.

Plants can be ordered online: https://greenwichbotanicalcenter.org/product-category/plant-sale by phone or by mail. Call the GEC at 203-869-9242 to request a brochure.

All plants must be pre-ordered and will be available for pick up on April 21 and April 22 from 10:00am – 4:00pm at the greenhouse. Curbside pick-up can also be arranged.
