Greenwich 4th Graders Bring Plants and Joy to Nursing Home Residents

Two Sacred Heart Greenwich fourth graders potted and decorated 25 plants and delivered them to residents of Greenwich Woods Rehabilitation and Health Center. The students, Ellie Contino and Alexa Hughes, accompanied by Lisa Lyons-Young, Coordinator for Community Service for the school, met residents of the skilled nursing facility and adorned its outside courtyard with the plants. Marguerite Santanastasio and Xenia Scardigino, residents at Greenwich Woods, welcomed the students and asked what motivated them to decorate and donate the plants.

Alexa explained, “I started doing community service when I would go along with my sister while she was doing it and I liked it.”

Ellie said, “I like doing things for the community and love all crafts.”

The girls said they’d be happy to return when the Greenwich Woods butterfly garden becomes active.

Ms. Scardigino also invited the girls to come and try their hand at beating her, the reigning champion, in the next Greenwich Woods cornhole tournament.
