A gathering at Steinway & Sons celebrated Greenwich High School’s new grand concert piano which was the result of a public-private partnership. Private donations raised about half of the $150,000 cost. Steinway offered a significant institutional discount and the Board of Education paid for the remainder. Photo: Leslie Yager October 2019

Back in 2019, Greenwich High School community headed to Steinway & Sons showroom on Greenwich Ave to celebrate the school’s new 9-foot long Steinway grand concert piano in the 1,400-seat performing arts center.

At the time, Patrick Taylor who ran the chorus program at the high school, said the difference between the new Steinway piano and the 6ft, 11-inch “living room model” that was the school’s workhorse for 50 years was “night and day.”

The selection committee had even taken a trip to the to the Steinway & Sons factory in Astoria, Queens before they finalized their decision.

The old piano was in such disrepair and that music selections worked around the functionality of the piano and which keys didn’t stick.
