Fun, Free April Vacation Week Activities at Byram Shubert Library

The Byram Shubert Library is taking children on a scientific journey this Spring School Vacation Week.

ScienceTellers. The exciting free programs for children begin on Monday, April 11th at 10:30 a.m. with ScienceTellers’ presentation of Dragons and Demons. Children from 5 to 12 years old will be involved in the adventures of two intrepid villagers as they try to outwit the Evil Ice Sorcerers, along the way demonstrating the different states of matter.

Chemistry – and gravity – are the focus of “Spin, Pop, Boom”, 10:30 a.m. in the Friends Community Room. The chemical properties of acids and bases – and an explosion or two – will be explained in a fun and interactive way.

Fun with Chess with Master Rich at 1 p.m. on Tuesday is a monthly foray into the rules and play of this ancient game. The Friends of the Byram Shubert Library invite players from novice to advanced to participate – and learn.

The Mad Scientist’s workshop on Wednesday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. stars “dry ice”. Students will see the changes in matter before their eyes…all leading to the excitement of an explosive grand finale (sshhh!)!

Gears shift on Thursday as the emphasis is on “coding“, a simple way to learn computer programming. Based on a visual, user-friendly language, which utilizes predefined commands, coding teaches children the logic and flow required for programming and provides the building blocks of problem solving and persistence. Laptop computers will be provided. The workshops are limited to 12 students. To register, call the library at 203.531.0426.

The workshops begin on Wednesday, April 13th at 1 p.m. with an Hour of Code for children in grades 1 through 3. Thursday, April 14th at 12:30 p.m. there’s an Hour of Code for children in grades 3 through 5. Saturday, April 16th, at 10:30 a.m. the Hour of Code is aimed at children in grades 5 through 7.

Be sure to call the library at 203.531.0426 to register.
