Revolution Wind Offshore Wind Project Reaches Full Commercial Operation

On Friday Governor Lamont’s week in review noted that on Wednesday, project developer Ørsted announced that the Revolution Wind offshore wind project had reached its commercial operation date.

The announcement marked the project’s official completion of construction and the start of it generating commercial power under a power purchase agreement.

Construction began on the project in 2023.

Located approximately 15 nautical miles southeast of Point Judith, Rhode Island, the project will provide enough electricity to the New England grid to power 350,000 homes, equivalent to about 2.5% of the region’s electricity supply.

Connecticut will purchase 304 MW of the final output from Revolution Wind with the remaining 400 MW to be delivered to Rhode Island. Connecticut’s share will meet about 5% of the state’s overall electricity demand.

“This project being fully operational is a significant milestone for Connecticut and a welcome addition to our energy mix,” Governor Lamont said. “Revolution Wind will help to lower utility costs for families and businesses, improve the reliability of our grid, and provide clean electricity that will power 350,000 homes. I offer my congratulations to the project’s developer and the many skilled Connecticut workers who worked hard to complete this project. This moment was a long time coming, and this project weathered multiple storms in the form of challenges from the federal administration. I commend everyone involved for staying the course and keeping focused on the goal—to get this project completed and online, delivering affordable, reliable, and clean power to our grid to benefit our residents.”

Also this week US Senator Richard Blumenthal released a statement about the news that Revolution Wind was fully operational.

“Today marks the beginning of a new electricity era in Connecticut. With Revolution Wind fully operational, Connecticut’s electricity supply will be greener and more affordable. With fuel costs continuing to climb, this project couldn’t have been completed at a better time. I will keep fighting to lower electricity costs and protect projects that develop clean, alternative energy sources and lessen our dependence on fossil fuels,” Blumenthal said.

Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) released the following statement:

“The completion of Revolution Wind is an important step towards bringing down rising energy costs across the Connecticut. This project will power 350,000 homes and, beginning in 2028, save customers $500 million annually. I’m glad to see this project become fully operational despite repeated attempts by the Trump Administration to shut it down. With the war in Iran driving up energy prices across the country, we should be making it easier to bring new sources of electricity online, not putting obstacles in their way. I am grateful to my colleagues at the federal, state, and local levels for their continued advocacy on this issue.”
