Two Jersey City, NJ men face larceny charges after Greenwich Police received a license plate reader alert that a stolen motor vehicle was traveling through Greenwich near I95 and East Putnam Ave in Riverside. The
On July 2 on around 10:30pm, officers located the vehicle near a business in Riverside Commons, conducted a traffic stop, and detained both men.
During the course of their investigation, officers spoke with both occupants of the vehicle, later identified as Mahnoud M Atoun, 21, and Zeyed Mohamed Atoun, 23, who provided inconsistent and conflicting statements regarding their whereabouts, destination and circumstances surround their use of the vehicle. They were unable to provide consistent or credible information when questioned and their accounts did not align.
Additionally, officers confirmed through the New Jersey ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) and Penske that the vehicle had not been lawfully returned and was still reported as stolen.
Based on the inconsistent statements, confirmation of the vehicle’s stolen status and totality of circumstances, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest both men.
Mahmoud M Atoun was charged with Larceny 1 and Conspiracy to Commit Larceny 1st degree – class B Felonies. His bond was set at $3,000 and he was assigned a date in Stamford Superior Court on July 17, 2026. According to the CT Judicial Branch website he posted the required 7% bond and was released, but a rearrest was ordered.
Zeyad Mohamed Atoun was also charged with Larceny 1 and Conspiracy to Commit Larceny 1st degree. His bond was set at $5,000 and he was also assigned a date in Stamford Superior court on July 17, 2026. He is due back in court on Aug 18, 2026.
