RAABE: The Rink Navigates Past the Ice-Berg

Submitted by Brian Raabe

Ink spilled here recently on how the rink redevelopment project should enjoy an ocean view.

Nevermind that thinking has been rejected.

Nevermind that we have a site proven to be fit for purpose (How was that proven? It’s where the rink currently stands!)

Six decades of sport and leisure have demonstrated adequate parking, traffic flow, and site optimization – right where the new rink is to be built.

The idea of a change in location reminds me of the University of Chicago adage, “Sure it (the current rink site) works in practice, but will it work in theory?”

What’s the game afoot here?

There has been more chaff thrown at this project in an effort to misdirect than any in recent town memory.

Don’t like the flip plan.

Don’t like the site plan.

Don’t like the lack of Private money secured.

Don’t like the approval process.

We’ve stalled and deliberated an additional $10 million into the cost.

And public good should not rely on private donation. Period.

There’s a certain cowardice that should be called out for what it is.

An effort to kill the project without having to be on the record with a no.

If I were litigating the other side of this I would point out that is the nature of legislation. That is the hallmark of deliberation.

All questions must be answered.

To a point, yes.

But to watch year after year pass and see kids literally age out of sport is not legislating.

It’s sloth.

So let’s drop the puck.

The RTM meeting is in front of our faces and there’s been enough equivocating.

For the RTM –

If your constituents want the rink for Greenwich – vote yes.

If they don’t – vote no.

But don’t hide behind the bureaucracy we’ve witnessed.

Stop throwing off more chaff and just own your no vote.

Better yet, let’s get shovels in the ground and build this thing.

It may not be a water view, but when that Zamboni floats past the glass it will be as majestic as any ship on the Sound.
