On Wednesday around 9:30am Greenwich Schools superintendent Dr. Toni Jones emailed families apologizing for the challenging morning travel conditions that impacted both staff and families.
“We will not count tardiness this morning as we know that the roads were not in good condition. If your family was unable to make it to school at all, please contact the school directly for an excused absence,” Jones said.
Jones went on to remind families that decisions about closures or delays are made at 4:30am based on information available at that time.
“This morning, I thought we were going to be in school before the heavy snow started based on my early morning conference call with the weather service. Obviously, I was not correct. The snow fell much quicker and heavier than predicted.”
Indeed, the NWS issued a “special weather statement” at 7:47 about a possible 3 inches of new snow in southern Connecticut on Wednesday.
“Snow currently moving through the area may come down briefly heavy at times, reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less. Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with locally up to 3 inches possible. When encountering the heavy snow, slow down, use headlights, and leave extra room between you and the car in front of you,” the NWS statement said.
“Every superintendent in most districts will tell you that one aspect we do not enjoy is making snow calls!” Jones said in her email. “Again, my apologies to those of you who found the travel treacherous this morning as I never want to put any of our staff, students, or families in challenging travel situations.”
She added that the afternoon commute is expected to be much smoother.
“I am hopeful that the rest of the week will be easier to predict. Thank you for the grace in my lack of weather predicting abilities this morning.”
