Update Oct 7: Greenwich Police Captain Patrick Smyth confirmed that the person who died in the crash last Friday at Byram Park was Eugene Banks, 60, of Stamford.

Update, Oct 3: The scene at Byram Park is cleared of all emergency personnel and the area is now open to the public. The collision is currently under active investigation in coordination with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

First Update: After Greenwich Police closed the entrance to Byram Park early Friday morning due to what they described as a collision and vehicle fire, they updated the media to say the collision involved a fatality.
A press release from police at about 12:30 said at approximately 5:16am on Friday on police responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision near the entrance the park, located at 4 Ritch Avenue West.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that the involved vehicle had caught fire. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.
Tragically, the driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Greenwich Police Department’s Traffic Division is currently conducting a full investigation into the cause of the crash.
The area surrounding the park’s front entrance remains closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic as the investigation continues. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes until further notice.
Access to Byram Park via the main entrance at Ritch Avenue West will remain temporarily closed while officers remain on scene.
Police thanked the public for their patience and cooperation as we work to investigate this incident thoroughly.
