Superintendent Appoints Dr. Benjamin Markus Interim Coordinator of English Language Arts K-8

Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones has appointed Dr. Benjamin Markus as Interim Coordinator, ELA K-8, effective July 26, 2021.

Dr. Markus will be responsible for designing, developing, and evaluating the English Language Arts program K-8.

In addition, he will provide organization and leadership in the adoption and use of instructional materials; plan and conduct professional learning and development for staff members; conduct teacher evaluations; keep all stakeholders informed of program developments and numerous other responsibilities related to curriculum and development.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Markus join GPS, sharing his wealth of knowledge and strong leadership skills to help guide us into the next phase of excellence,” Superintendent Dr. Jones said in a release.

Dr. Markus joins GPS from the New York City Department of Education, having served most recently as an Assistant Principal at Queens Academy High School. His previous experience from across New York is also as an early childhood teacher, and a host of leadership roles from Dean, Programmer, and Lead Teacher. He has been responsible for English Language Arts testing and assessment, parent engagement, academic audits, online learning program, exceptional education compliance, mentoring, and coaching new teachers. Dr. Markus has extensive experience with students and staff, designing and writing curriculum in all core areas, raising academic achievement, and closing the achievement gap at all educational levels. His expertise in programs for unique learners – from special education to advanced learning – will be an asset to the Greenwich school community.

Dr. Markus holds a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College in Political Science, a Master of Public Administration from Syracuse University, a Master of Science in Childhood Elementary and Special Education from Mercy College and is currently pursuing a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from Harvard University. In addition, Dr. Markus serves as 1st Lieutenant-Chaplain for the United States Air Force – Connecticut Air National Guard and holds a Doctor of Theology from Evangel University.
