A place-based semester high school for girls based in Bozeman, Montana, The Traveling School’s mission is to amplify female voices through a transformative educational experience. The all-female environment allows students to focus on academic achievement, develop leadership skills, and build self-esteem skills in a supportive community.
Unplugged from technology, students live out of backpacks for 15-weeks in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Arizona while tackling 5 rigorous academic courses.
The Traveling School students leave behind phones and use headlamps to take notes by hand from visiting speakers.
They build critical thinking and outdoor skills, investigating their own identities and leadership styles in the process. Students leave their semester confident and inspired to make change in their communities, and because The Traveling School is designed to complement students’ home curriculum, they smoothly transition back to their home schools.
Bringing together 16 girls and four teachers to learn about new cultures and explore vast landscapes, students redefine their relationship to academics as they grapple with real-life impacts of global issues such as climate change, power dynamics, identity, and privilege.
The students are selected to create a diverse and cohesive cohort, and the 4:1 student to teacher ratio enhances mentorship and community-building.
The students build critical thinking and outdoor skills, investigating their own identities and leadership styles in the process. Students leave their The Traveling School semester confident and inspired to make change in their communities. When young women build leadership skills, they become tomorrow’s changemakers.
The school is designed to complement students’ home curriculum, so there is a smooth transition back to their home schools.
