Woman Who Jumped from I-95 Bridge over Mianus River Transported to Greenwich Hospital

On Tuesday afternoon the Greenwich Police Dispatch Center received a call from the Connecticut State Police requesting assistance with a possible suicidal female sitting on the edge of the I-95 northbound bridge over the Mianus River, between Exits 4 and 5.

Greenwich Police dispatched several units to the area.  One of the patrol officers made contact with the person and was able to speak with her.

While this officer was talking with the subject, other members of Greenwich Police, along with the assistance of some of the area marina workers, were able to take a position in a work boat underneath the bridge.

Police say that for reasons unknown, the female subject suddenly pushed herself from her seated position over the edge of the bridge and fell into the Mianus River.

The Greenwich Patrol Officer in the aforementioned boat was able to get to the female out from the water and pulled her into the boat.

She was taken to one of the nearby marinas, where medical care was handed over to Greenwich Emergency Medical Services.

The subject was then transported to the Greenwich Hospital without incident and an initial assessment showed no signed of life-threatening or serious injuries.

“Mental health issues can make life unbearable for the people who have them,” police said in a statement. “At the same time, these problems can have a wider effect on society as a whole, especially when they go untreated or treatment is delayed.”

Greenwich Police Department reminded the community that there are many ways to get help, as well as assistance for family members.

The Town of Greenwich Department of Human Services in partnership with the Greenwich Police Department and numerous community based agencies created Greenwich C.A.R.E. (Community Agencies for Resiliency and Empowerment) to offer help, support, and guidance for those in need.
