Woman Charged by Warrant for 2016 Larceny of Cigarettes from ACME

On May 28 Connecticut State Police contacted Greenwich Police Dept to advise they were in custody of Verna T. Hammonds, 41, of unknown address, who had an outstanding warrant out of Greenwich for Larceny 6 and Conspiracy to Commit Larceny 6.

Police say that back in September of 2016 Hammonds took multiple packs of cigarettes from ACME grocery store on West Putnam Avenue while she was employed there.

Police say she continuously asked another employee to hand her a pack of cigarettes and that she would then place the cigarettes in her pocket and leave the store without paying.

The incidents were captured by video surveillance.

Greenwich Police met with state troopers on I-95 at the Darien rest stop to take custody of Hammonds. She was transported to Greenwich Police headquarters. She was charged with Larceny 6 and Conspiracy to Commit Larceny. Her bond was set at $500 which she was unable to post and remained in police custody at the time of her arrest. She was assigned a court date in Stamford Superior Court on June 11, 2021.
