Unregistered Car Almost Runs Over Owner After He Leaves It in Neutral to Avoid Tow

Greenwich Police arrested a Ridgewood, NY man on Oct 1 after responding to Edgewood Ave on a report of a male sleeping in a parked vehicle with his pants pulled down.

Police said they found Anthony A Vargas, 29, sleeping within the vehicle but he was not exposed. However, police said Vargas was parked in the public roadway in a vehicle that was not registered and had the wrong plates attached. Police said Mr. Vargas also had a suspended NY driver’s license.

Upon being told that the vehicle would be towed, Mr. Vargas defied officers’ orders not to move the it. Police said Vargas re-entered his vehicle and shifted it into neutral, rolling it down the hill and partially into a private parking lot. Vargas, police said, then forgot to set the parking brake or place the vehicle into park upon exiting the vehicle, which continued to roll backward, toward Vargas, almost running him over.

Vargas was arrested and charged with Interfering with a Police Investigation, Reckless Driving, Operating without a License, Misuse of Registration and Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle

Vargas was released after posting the required minimum 7% surety bond of $1500 ($105) and was assigned a court date of Oct 14 in Stamford Superior Court.
