Trio Arrested for “Lean” Drink after Pharmacist Reports Suspicious Activity

On Oct 28 a pharmacist on Greenwich Ave contacted police about suspicious activity.

Plain clothes officers responded and detained three men believed to be involved in passing a fraudulent prescription in order to obtain a controlled substance.

Police seized the fraudulent prescription, suspected marijuana and paraphernalia, oxycodone pills, a fraudulent driver’s license, an ATM card in the name of an unknown person, and several ounces of a recreational drug beverage known as “Lean.”

Lean is slang for the intoxicating beverage that results from mixing a soft drink with prescription cold syrup with promethazine and codeine.

The beverage often presents with a purple color and is commonly consumed out of cups.

Police arrested Dwayne Smith, 19, of Bridegport; and Elijah Arnold, 22, and Hadiya Ali, 21, both of Mt Vernon. They face multiple charges including Conspiracy to Possess and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Mr. Smith was additionally charged with Forgery, Identity Theft, Driving without a License, Misuse of Plate, Driving an Unregistered Motor Vehicle. He was able to post his bond of $20,000 and has a date in Stamford Superior Court on Jan 4, 2021.

Mr. Arnold also posted $20,000 bond and shares a Jan 4, 2020 court date with Mr. Smith.

Ms Ali was released on a promise to appear on Jan 4, 2020 in Stamford Superior Court.
