Suspect Arrested for Allegedly Defrauding Elderly Woman in Greenwich

Greenwich Police arrested a Bronx man for defrauding an 87-year-old woman of $9,500.

Police say Armando Aquino-Jimenez, 37, was charged with Larceny 2 and Interfering with Officers on the afternoon of Oct 18.

Police said the elderly woman got a phone call from someone pretending to be her grandson, and saying he had been in a car accident and needed bail money.

The victim spoke with a person who said he was the attorney for the grandson. He said he’d send a courier to collect the money from the woman’s home in Riverside. The caller also requested a shirt for the grandson, saying the grandson’s shirt was covered in blood from the car accident.

The victim called her actual grandson who said he wasn’t in an accident. Other people on scene detected the scam and blocked the suspect’s car.

Police arrived at the house and arrested Mr. Aquino-Jimenez. They believe he was the only involved in the scam.

Police warn residents to be wary of phone calls asking them for cash or gift cards immediately.

Aquini-Jimenez has a date in Stamford Superior Court on Nov 1, 2021.

He was able to post the required 10% of his $2,500 bond.
