LETTER: If ‘Trump-Camillo’ Signs Got Greenwich Police Captain Fired, Why Can Police Union Take a Political Position?

Submitted by Monica Prihoda, Old Greenwich

I appreciate the work and service of the Greenwich Police Department.  I also support the concept and work of Unions.   A favorite movie is Oscar winning actress Sally Field in the title role of Norma Rae.

I am responding to the recent endorsement by the Police Union of Kimberly Fiorello, a Republican candidate running against Kathleen Stowe for State Representative District 149.  Also, if you look at the Greenwich Police Facebook page the photo posted along with the inscription: Republicans support the GPD and the Democrats do not.  Really?  I do.

Having said that, I am wondering what exactly is the difference between an individual police officer such as Greenwich Police Captain Mark Kordick and the body of the Police Union when taking political positions?

Captain Kordick got in very hot water and fired when he was involved in the posting of political signs during the Camillo-Oberlander election for First Selectman last election.  Will Police Union member officers suffer the same fate?

Just wondering.

I look forward to the Greenwich League of Women Voters 2020 Candidate Debates on Thursday, October 8th, 7:00-9:00 PM. I hope they pose this question.  Any registrants can pose other questions to candidates.  The debate is on Zoom and it is free.

While I serve as a representative on the RTM for Old Greenwich District 6, the opinion is mine only, not that of the RTM. Monica Prihoda
