GPD: Reminder, Rules for Bikes and Scooters on Sidewalks

Due to an increase in children using bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters going back to school the Greenwich Police Department would like to remind everyone to be safe and follow the rules of the road.

Children under 16 must wear helmets when riding bicycles including electric bikes.  

Children under 16 must wear a helmet when riding an electric foot scooter.    

Anyone operating a bicycle, an electric bicycle or an electric foot scooter on a sidewalk or a crosswalk, where allowed, shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.  

No person shall operate a bicycle, an electric bicycle or an electric foot scooter upon or along a sidewalk or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk if such operation is prohibited.  

Electric Foot Scooters or E-Scooters cannot be used on public sidewalks in any of the business district in the Town per Town Ordinance.    

In these areas, E-Scooters must be used on the road or in a bicycle lane.   

No person shall ride a bike, e-bike, e-scooter, skateboard or skate on any of the following streets or locations:  

East Putnam Avenue   

 Sidewalks, both sides, from Lafayette Place to Milbank Avenue.   

Greenwich Avenue   

 Sidewalks, both sides, entire length.   

West Putnam Avenue   

 Sidewalks, both sides, from Field Point Road to Lafayette Place.   

Havemeyer Building North Parking Lot   

Town Hall, including Rear Patio Area   

Cos Cob School Rear Area   

Sound Beach Avenue   

 Sidewalks, both sides, from Webb Avenue to Edgewater Drive.   

Drivers should use caution and be watchful for children on bikes and scooters especially during possible school starting and ending times.
