DUI for Driver Who Nearly Collided with GPD Patrol Car

On Saturday Feb 16 around 11:30pm, Greenwich Police on patrol in the area of East Putnam Ave observed a vehicle traveling east cross the double yellow line and enter into westbound traffic. A patrol unit had to swerve to avoid collision.

A DMV inquiry revealed that the car’s registration had expired in 2015.

After Police stopped the car, the driver William J Hammel, 52, of Deep Valley Trail in Stamford was unable to perform field sobriety tests to standard.

Hammel was charged with DUI, Failure to Maintain Lane and Driving an Unregistered Vehicle.

Hammel’s bond was set at $25o and he has a date in Stamford Superior Court on March 4, 2019.
