Detective Honored for Work in Elderly Sweetheart Scam

Detective James Manning has been named Greenwich Police Department Officer of the Month. In September 2019, an elderly Greenwich resident fell victim to a “sweetheart” internet scam and suffered a significant financial loss. Detective James Manning was assigned to the case and uncovered a complex international network of fraud. He coordinated the investigation and obtained assistance from numerous law enforcement agencies across the country.

Detective Manning ultimately identified the suspect. In June 2020, the United States Secret Service and local law enforcement in Illinois located the suspect and arrested him on Detective Manning’s arrest warrant. The best part of the investigation was that Detective Manning was able to recover the money lost by the victim.

The suspect has been implicated in several other fraud schemes, and this case helped those authorities with their investigations.

“Detective Manning’s persistence and dedication to the victim is an exemplar of how Greenwich Police Officers and Detectives perform their duties,” said Chief James Heavey. “We cannot accept suspects preying upon our elders. Jimmy’s excellent police work has helped several other elderly victims regain their financial loss and dignity”.
