Car Thief Changes Mind after Seeing Child in Back Seat

Greenwich Police are again asking residents to lock their cars and bring their key with them.

Police say that on Saturday at approximately 9:30 am, the owner of a car left it unlocked and the keys within and went into a store in Cos Cob.

“A thief saw an easy target and entered the car in order to steal it,” Police wrote in a Facebook post. “Luckily, the thief saw the operator left their child in the car and immediately decided against stealing it.”

Police say the thieves left Greenwich in a vehicle they had previously stolen. They were eventually pursued by New York authorities.

Fortunately, in the Greenwich the child was not harmed in the incident, but it could have turned out badly.

“DO NOT leave your keys in your car,” Police said. “This is a preventable crime. Remove the keys and lock your vehicle doors.”
