After an incident on Wednesday that residents commented on in real time on local social media, Greenwich Police shared a release with the facts on Thursday.
Police said that approximately 2:02pm, they received a Real Time Crime alert regarding an active vehicle pursuit initiated by the New York City Police Department.
The pursuit stemmed from a robbery involving an off-duty NYPD officer. The suspects, identified as a male and a female, were operating a black BMW SUV and were traveling northbound on I-95 toward Greenwich.
Police said multiple units responded to assist with the evolving incident, coordinating with NYPD, Harrison Police, Stamford Police, Connecticut State Police, the FBI, and the Westchester County Police Dept Aviation Unit.
At approximately 2:12pm, the suspect vehicle entered Greenwich. Greenwich Police officers strategically positioned their patrol vehicles to assist incoming NYPD units. During this time, the suspect vehicle was involved in two motor vehicle crashes within Greenwich on East Putnam Ave.
Minor injuries were reported at the scene of one accident.
The suspect vehicle was eventually abandoned in Stamford, near Wire Mill Road. NYPD and Stamford Police officers advised that the suspects—a Black male and a Black female, both wearing all black—fled on foot into a wooded area approximately 50 feet from the abandoned vehicle.
Greenwich officers provided support in the coordinated search and apprehension of the suspects alongside NYPD, State Police, and Stamford Police.
Finally, at 2:51pm, the female suspect was taken into custody in Stamford.
The male suspect was apprehended three minutes later, at 2:54pm, in the same area.
The suspects were identified by NYPD as:
• Driver: Jonser Hernandez DOB:04/08/1998
• Passenger: Betsy Bermudez DOB: 01/24/1998
Arrest warrants are forthcoming.
