Alleged ‘Obituary Burglar’ Arrested by Greenwich Police

On Wednesday Greenwich Police went to Westchester County, NY to extradite a Bronx woman.

Latonia Shelecia Stewart, 28, of Wickham Ave in Bronx, NY was charged with Larceny 1, Burglary 1 and Burglary 2.

The charges stem back to an incident on Oct 19 in western Greenwich where more than $20,000 in property was stolen from a home.

Stewart was unable to post her $250,000 bond and remained in police custody.

She has a date in Stamford Superior Court on Jan 2, 2020.

Ms. Stewart was arraigned in Westchester, NY last August on a 22-count indictment for a series of residential burglaries in 2017 and 2018 in homes of families attending funeral services.

Ms. Stewart allegedly trolled for burglary victims in the obituaries, targeting the grieving family members of the recently deceased, prosecutors said.

“Stewart looked up obituaries online and targeted homes of individuals she believed would not be home while attending the decedent’s services. When the people returned home, they found their home burglarized,” prosecutors said.

In Westchester the charges stemmed from incidents in Rye Brook, Cortlandt, Scarsdale, Irvington, Ossining and Tarrytown.

Greenwich Police have warned residents who are headed to a funeral not to leave their homes empty.
